GEORGE SAND & CHOPIN WEEKEND: Second Evening

Chopin's Twenty-four Preludes, opus 28

Performed on the piano by Jacqueline Bourgès-Maunoury, punctuated by readings by Marie-Christine Barrault

Texts by George Sand, Gide, Liszt...

Without intermission

The Preludes op. 28 by Chopin were designed to form a whole. Based on the alternation of moments of tension and relaxation, this cycle also incorporates characteristics of other genres such as mazurka or romance. Short in duration, these pieces contain all the magic of the musical snapshots of Romanticism.

Chopin composed his Preludes between 1835 and 1839 and completed them in Majorca, where, aged 29, he stayed with George Sand to escape the winter climate of Paris and try to treat his chronic tuberculosis. There she wrote her work “A Winter in Majorca”.

The Twenty-four Preludes are dedicated to his friends Camille Pleyel and Joseph Christoph Kessler.

Endowed with a very sure technique, a very extensive sound palette and above all a great inner emotion (...), JBM gave all its fullness in the twenty-four Preludes of Chopin op.28 which benefited from a sound breathing exceptional, of deep intelligence and an execution alternating sensitivity, without mawkishness and more serious or very subtly measured passages. The quality of the artist's touch and in particular the work of his left hand is quite astonishing. » VAUCLUSE MORNING
